*Results* Calderon vs. Cazares II Ivan "Iron Boy" Calderon retained his WBO junior-flyweight championship with a seventh-round technical decision over Hugo Cazares, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The scores read 67-66 | 68-65 | 68-65, all for Calderon. An accidental headbutt in round seven opened up a deep gash on Calderon's forehead, which warranted an immediate doctor stoppage. After the fight, Calderon stated that he was willing to fight Cazares for a third time or take on a new challenge, such as the winner of the upcoming Solis-Viloria matchup, in order to unify the belts at 108 lbs. Cazares, on the other hand, was very disappointed with the decision and believed that he should have been named the victor.
IMO Calderon controlled the fight from the second round on. He was using the ring to his advantage and boxed beautifully against the crude, raw Cazares. I had the fight 68-65 for Calderon, giving Cazares the slight edge in a couple of rounds where he was pressing the action. Calderon still has a lot of fight left in him, even though he's getting up there in age, but at only 5 foot, I don't think he will do as well at flyweight, if he is planning to move up in weight. |
