    Default Boxing- Best for self-defense?

Hey guys, I'll start off by saying I'm starting at a boxing gym this coming Tuesday. I'm in pretty good shape right now, but I know it'll probably kick my ass in more ways than one. Anyway, moving on to the thread topic.

I spent a month at a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu gym, hoping to learn some self-defense and to stay in great shape. After the month was up, I realized I was very very little more prepared to defend myself if need be than I was when I started (what am I going to do, hold a guy in an arm bar and say "now when i let go, DONT hit me!"?). Is boxing one of the best fighting arts for self-defense outside the gym? I'm far from being one to fight often but it can be the difference between having a messed up face/ribs/limbs for the rest of your life and being fine, or worse.

Thanks for reading my short novel here lol, and thanks in advance for replies and opinions.

A good boxing coach will show you proper ways to warm up, including stretching. Avoiding injury during your workouts is key. A common complaint is "but I don't have time to warm up while being attacked!" That's correct! But, you are not in a self defense situation now, you are performing demanding physical activities in class. If you are working out, practicing self-defense techniques, or taking a boxing class, then you owe it to yourself to prepare your body for what is coming.

Good luck, there's not one ultimate form of self-defence but boxing would definitely help.

Also if you get beaten up there, learn from your mistakes pick yourself up and go back for more!

Thumbs up Re: Boxing- Best for self-defense?

I've trained Karate for years before get into a boxing gym; and, before boxing, I was (quite) capable to defend myself, but I was not acustomed to get hit, because in Karate we can't hit directly on the opponent's face. Because of that, I was always a little worried of getting myself into a brawl because I was not confident of my chin, my resistance.

And, (life taught me that) the most important ability you need to survive on a street fight is the confidence that you have in your ability to get hit and survive that. Even if you didn't get hit (you can kayo your opponent before that), you need to be confident to enter in a fight and win. Without that, you'll will get smashed and probably kayoed.

Boxing is perfect to give you that kind of confidence. Even if you train only for recreation and fun (that's what I do) you will get hit a lot of times on the face and it's good for us, because we need to learn that we aren't made of glass. Even your opponent is using a boxing glove (what you <of course> will not find on the streets), that's good, because increase your confidence in yourself.

But look, I'm not saying that you have to let your face get hit in every fight (I prefer dodge the punches,)... but you need that to learn more about YOURSELF; and, in sparring sessions, you will have the perfect opportunity to learn that (because it's impossible to enter in a ring and not get smashed on the face).

Besides, you should learn how to hit, too... using this combination (ability to hit, get hit, confidence, dodging) you will be always prepared to face a fight when life puts you in.

Understand that I am not trying to incite people to ever get into a fight to solve their problems (I'm a peaceful guy )... but preparation for it is important too... because we never know what we'll find on the next corner. That's my opinion.

Thai boxing is closest to a street fight so I would say that is the best form of self defence!
