![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Beijing Olympics 2008 Frankie Gavin was last night caught up in a bitter row over his weight after Britain's gold medal campaign got off to a "terrible" start. Lightweight Gavin, 22, was one of Britain's best medal prospects but boxing coach Terry Edwards pulled him out of the Olympics and today's draw, claiming that making the 60kg weight limit was putting his health at risk. But Gavin's nutritionist Kerry Kayes branded the decision "criminal" and his club coach Tommy Chaney said there was an untold story behind the row with the Birmingham fighter set to sign a £1million pro deal. Chaney, of Hall Green amateur boxing club, said: "He's devastated and thinks he has let everyone down. I can't say anything for legal reasons but there's a story to be told. "He could have turned pro after the world championship but he tried to do the Olympics for the country." Gavin wanted to fight in the heavier light-welter division (64kgs) in China but that place was taken by Bradley Saunders. Veteran coach Edwards said Gavin pleaded with him for one last chance to make the weight but he refused, fearing for the boxer's health. "It's the hardest decision I've ever had to take," said Edwards. Source: Olympics: Frankie Gavin weight row farce gives Team GB worst possible start - mirror.co.uk

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Do you know what? I was watching the news last night and it came out that Gavin was only 3lb off the weight. I knew then that there was more to this story than meets the eye. If it comes out that they stopped him going beacuse he has a pro deal in the offing when he gets back then that is disgusting and it would be the British Olympic Boxing Officials that will have let the nation down. Kerry Kayes is a world renowned nutritionist and for him to say that the decision was "criminal" smacks of some kind of wrong doing. Nice find NFCC

. I actually found this out on my paper round, it was on the back page of the Mirror, so it's pretty big news . I also hope this doesn't upset the GB camp. That would be the worst thing that could happen .

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | If Kayes thinks he could of made weight then Edwards should not have pulled him out. Im sure its today that they weigh in and with the opening of the games tonight Frankie would have had around 48 hours to rehydrate. On the flipside though if he did make weight for this fight he would have to be weighed in every 24 hours for each fight he had so he would have been struggling badly to make it for his second fight. If the fighter and his nutrition coach think they can do it though then they should have got the benefit of the doubt. The olympics is just to important. Im sure after the games are over we'll hear both versions of the story in fulll. |
