Default Frankie Gavin out of Olympics!!!

Medal hope Gavin out of Olympics

British gold medal prospect Frankie Gavin has pulled out of the Olympic Games having failed to make his weight.
The lightweight world amateur champion is now expected to fly home from the Team GB training camp in Macau.
"Regrettably it is clear that Frankie will not make his weight before tomorrow morning's weigh-in," admitted head coach Terry Edwards on Thursday.
The 23-year-old's exit is a huge blow for Team GB as he was one of the squad's brightest medal hopes.
He had beaten every major competitor in his Olympic class after becoming the first Briton to win an amateur world title in Chicago last year.
"Frankie has been working his whole boxing career towards the Olympic Games and he is obviously completely devastated," added Edwards.
"My advice to him has been to take stock over the next couple of weeks and I will talk to him about his future as soon as I get home."
Gavin, from Birmingham, was supremely confident ahead of Beijing, telling BBC Sport: "I should win (at) the Olympics."
But BBC boxing commentator Mike Costello said he had struggled to make the weight all year.
"For the first time in his life he has been training like a professional not an amateur, and he has been getting bigger as a result and fighting a running battle with his weight."
Costello said Gavin was not able to step up to the heavier class because fellow British boxing team-mate Bradley Saunders had already qualified in the light-welterweight.
"At the Olympics, the boxers have to make the weight every day they box," said Costello.
"Even if he had made the first weigh-in he might have struggled afterwards. Dehydration might have become a real problem." Team GB chief Simon Clegg, confirming Gavin's departure from the squad, said: "It is always regretful when an athlete who has qualified for the Olympic Games is unable to compete. "The BOA's focus is now to support its remaining 312 Team GB athletes who begin competing this Saturday."

The whole team has let us down......the trainers, nutritionalists and the fighter himself. Very silly mistake. Surely he knows you train like a pro when you actually are a pro

Yea he was always winning that gold ... realistically the whole camp should be disappointed wit hthemselves (excluding the other boxers) as they should have seen that this was going to happen and perhaps tested the boy @ 140... if he is better than Saunders at 140 then he should have been given that place.
You have to ask now though ... what has this done to Gavins marketability?
he could have gone on to Olympic gold ... and then turned pro and made millions like Amir Khan.

Winning the gold would probably have seen him sign with Frank Warren though, maybe its a blessing he didn't make weight.

LOL, you are probably right Tommy!!!
I wish i had the money to set up a promotion team .... Warren is a fool and constantly exposed as a greedy so and so and Maloney is just as bad!!

i know that they are going to be talking about where his career goes from here once the officials return from Beijing.
I cant see him waiting till 2012 so maybe he will go pro sooner rather than later.
