Jeff Lacy vs Epifanio Mendoza play by play I couldn't watch this fight life, but I just watched it now and wrote down my thoughts for each round in case anyone's interested:
Round 1
Lacy much more animated, moving his body very fast, than I've seen him in the past. 2 great jabs land for Lacy. Lacy having some success moving around fast and landing his jab. 2 big right hands lands for Lacy! Lacy said this is a new him and it looks like he's right. THis is the best first round I've ever seen him in. Mendoza having little success so far. Lacy is both landing some good punches and avoiding Mendoza's by bobbing, weaving and blocking. Uppercut lands for Mendoza at the end of the round.
Round to Lacy
10 - 9
Round 2
Now Mendoza a bit more animated to start off the rund. Lacy soon after lands a big head-turning right hand. Then Mendoza lands a big right hand soon after. Lacy lands several right hands to the body, straight right hands that he normally aims to the head. Huge right hand from Mendoza lands on the top of Lacy's head and Lacy is stumbling for about a minute!Lacy amazingly is surviving while stumbliing all over the place! Lacy lands a big right hand and now Mendoza is in trouble suddenly as Lacy regains his legs! Huge thudding left hook lands flush by Lacy at the bell.
Round to Mendoza, Lacy hurt him too but have to give Mendoza the round for making Lacy stumble for so long
19 - 19
Round 3
Now both fighters are a lot less animated to start this round. Mendoza eats a couple right hands as Lacy gets aggressive. Good right uppercut turns Lacy's head. Lacy throwing his punches on the inside extremely slow for some reason, but both guys are a little tired. Teddy Atlas suggesting Lacy hurt his right hand. Lacy lands an uppercut and Mendoza counters with a good left hook. Excellent 1-2 lands for Lacy pushing Mendoza to the ropes. Lacy landing someright hands. Huge left hook wobbles Mendoza at the bell.
Round to Lacy
29 - 28
Round 4
I didn't see it but Mendoza complaining about a low blow and walks away holding his crotch. Mendoza reaches, and misses, a huge uppercut. 2 great jabs land for Lacy like he was doing in the beginning of the first round. Blood apparently coming from Lacy's nose. Lacy lands a right with Mendoza against the ropes. excellent left hook - straight right lands for Lacy and it looks like Mendoza is hurt. But Mendoza bobs and weaves against the ropes to avoid further damage.
Round to Lacy
39 - 37
Round 5
Good round highlights show how exciting this fight has been. Overhand right lands for Lacy. Good right hand lands for Lacy and I think Mendoza is hurt, but difficult to tell. Mendoza goes down but may be from Lacy pushing him down. Lacy goes on the attack and lands some non-flush big punches. Huge right hand by Lacy must've hurt Mendoza. Lacy is definitely hurting Mnedoza. Mendoza holds Lacy and finds it difficult to let go even with the referree prying him off. Mendoza lands a learly illegal low blow and the referree gives him a warning. Lacy, much more economical now, lands a few short punches with Mendoza against the ropes.
Round to Lacy, a big one and appears to be leading him to the inevitable knockout if he continues
49 - 46
Round 6
Lacy appears to have been hurt by something Mendoza threw, but I didn't see it. Lacy's mouthpiece came out. Teddy Atlas' scorecard mirrors mine so far. I think this fight has been pretty easy to score. Mendoza lands a big right hand. Halfway into the round, a much less active one, is all Mendoza's. Mendoza landing some uppercuts on the inside. Did Lacy run out of gas? Apparently more blood coming out of Lacy's nose. Left hook lands for Lacy. decent right hand lands flush on Mendoza. Excellent jab knocks Mendoza's head back.
Round to Mendoza, very close but Lacy barely did anything the first half of the round
58 - 56
Round 7
Good right hand lands for Lacy with Mendoza in the corner and another right. Good uppercut on the inside hits Lacy. I said Teddy's scorecard mirrored mine last round, it still mirrors mine now, but I realize he gave Mendoza a 10-8 round for #2. I disagree with that. Lacy came back very strong that round. This round is fought almost completely on the inside. So not much action and very few meaningful punches landed. Mendoza lands some upercuts and body shots, but nothing serious. Neither fighter did particularly well this round, but Lacy does a little worse than Mendoza on the inside.
Round to Mendoza
67 - 66
Round 8
Lacy jumping up and down a lot, but neither fighter throwing much at all the first minute. Good right hand is lunged in with and lands on Mendoza. Lacy lunges in and lifts up Mendoza with a bear hug. Apparently there's swelling around the left eye of Lacy. 2 good right hooks lands on Lacy. Lacy looks hurt. Lacy then tackles Mendoza and Mendoza is having a lot of difficulty getting back up. He's holding the back of his head. Mendoza doesn't look good after that tackle. Replay shows Lacy eating those right hooks and a good uppercut. I'm not sure how Mendoza got so hurt. He seems fine now. Both fighters eat each other's right hands at the same time and Lacy stumbles badly! Mendoza lands a big left hook. And another one! Will lacy say on his feet? Lacy knows how to survive when hurt and stumbled. Amazing he hasn't been dropped yet. Bell rings possibly saving Lacy, though at that point Lacy probably had recovered.
Round to Mendoza, almost good enough for a 10-8 but I don't think so
76 - 76
Round 9
Last 3 rounds have really turned completely around for Mendoza as some statistics shown on the screen shows. Great jab lands for Lacy. Mendoza lands his jab as well. Good chopping right lands on Lacy. Lacy lunging in a lot, but that lunging takes a lot of power away from punches that land. Blood in the left eye of swelling Lacy Teddy points out. Left hook and right uppercut lands for Mendoza on the inside. Lacy attacking like crazy the last 30 seconds of the round, but not much landed.
Round to Mendoza, difficult round to score, not a whole lot happened
85 - 86
Round 10
last round, highlights are pretty entertaining for this fight. Lots of big moments for both fighters. Surprisingly good lunging jab lands for Lacy. Lacy getting more aggressive on the inside, but not more very effectively. Both fighters do their tired best to win the last round, but nothing really happened.
Round to Lacy, this and the last round could easily be scored 10-10 but I like to give the round to someone even if they only won it by a hair
95 - 95
Punch stats are remarkably similar. Teddy Atlas has the exact same final score of me, 95 - 95. Official scores are read, 95-95, 96-94 and 97-93 for Jeff Lacy. Teddy asks what round that last judge was watching. Looking back at my own scores, rounds 6 and 9 could've possibly gone to Lacy which would've made my score 97-93 too. But looking at this fight overall and counting the fact that Mendoza had Lacy seriously hurt several times, I have the feeling that Mendoza was slightly better or they were both pretty even.
Interview with Jeff Lacy, Lacy says he felt he did a "marvelous job." Teddy tells Lacy that both of them were hurt and Mendoza had him shaken up pretty bad with Lacy acknowledging. Teddy asks if Lacy if he tackled Mendoza to buy himself time after getting hurt. Lacy doesn't really answer the question and then finally says yes he did, that's what his experience brings to the table. So Teddy says, "ok, so you admit it." Lacy says yes and Teddy thanks him for being honest. |
